Phytophthora Root Rot and Stem Rot

Phytophthora Root Rot and Stem Rot: Caused by Phytophthora spp. and/or Phytopythium sp., this disease results in girdling and decay of crown tissue. Sudden wilt or blighting can occur when weather turns hot or dry. Phytophthora root and stem rot can readily establish in wet or poorly drained soils. Research in this area is ongoing.
